But we were together, and out of this fraternity something binding might come, to give us some sort of a foothold in America. —Filipino-American writer Carlos Bulosan in America is in the Heart
At the heart of my practice is the Society of 23, a super secret fictional brotherhood where I play all 23 brothers. Since 2008, this multidisciplinary project has examined ideas of belonging and individuality, using the brotherhood as a metaphor for America — a theatrical place that is layered and unresolved. Through an ongoing, nonlinear narrative that is sincere and absurd, the artwork positions identity as a continual negotiation between self and stage.
